Budget Categories Explained

Three main categories — Core, Capacity Building, and Capital — each serve different purposes. Here’s how they work in practice.

Core

Everyday support to help with daily life, social & community participation, consumables, and some transport.

Capacity Building

Build skills and independence — therapy, plan & financial management, employment supports, improved daily living.

Capital

Assistive technology and home/vehicle modifications — usually requires quotes and approval.

Who Manages the Funds?

  • NDIA-managed: you use registered providers; the Agency pays them directly.
  • Plan-managed: a plan manager pays invoices and tracks budgets for you.
  • Self-managed: you pay and claim reimbursements (more choice, more admin).

FAQs

Core can be flexible across its sub-categories. Capacity Building and Capital are usually fixed unless the plan is changed.

Review goals with your coordinator, check waitlists, and consider alternatives (group sessions, telehealth). Discuss at reassessment if budgets need adjusting.
